Notes: A native of Massachusetts, James Woods (1814/5-1886) served a church in Alabama in 1849 when the Presbyterian mission board selected him for duty in California. Recollections of pioneer work in California (1878) describes the Woods family's voyage round the Horn and early stay in San Francisco before moving to Stockton, where Woods ministered for more than four years. He describes his Stockton ministry in detail, also reminiscing about other Protestant clergy in the neighborhood. Briefer notice is given to his later pastorates in Los Angeles, Santa Rosa, and Healdsburg.

Harry T Fee was a local poet and nature lover who wrote poetry that appeared in magazines like Sunset Magazine and The Overland Express. He also contributed material to The Stockton Record. “Land of'Out of Doors” was the name of a weekly section of The Record in the 1920s. His father was Patrick Fee, an Irish immigrant to Stockton who ran a local livery station. Harry T. Fee wrote a description of Stockton's Main Street Street in 1880 as he remembered its people and businesses from when he was a little boy.

This religious tract was written by Inez Merrill Budd, wife of James Budd, a Stocktonian who served as California's 19th governor, 1895-1899. He had previously served in the House of Representatives, where he was instrumental in getting federal money to dredge the Stockton Channel.
