First the Basics -- It's the People

In the preface to his book, California Pioneer Register, 1542-1848, historian Hubert Howe Bancroft starts out by saying "All history, as a record of the acts of men, is biography."  What brings history to life is the story of the people who lived it.

So, my first post after this one is a set of basic guidelines for beginning family historians.  Even if the people you study aren't members of your family, you can use the same guidelines for starting to research the people of your community and the history they made.

The guide is brief so read each section carefully, try out the links offered, and come back again later to refresh your memory for the next step in your search.

I hope you find great surprises in your research.  Good luck.
